It is no surprise that sickness season is upon us. Everywhere I go people are sneezing and coughing. Yuck! Today, I am going to share how to boost your immune system naturally. These tips will keep you and your family from getting sick as often and your bodies will be better equipped to fight off the funk when you do get sick.
Back in my teaching days and even when my kids were younger, I felt like I was sick all the time. Despite my best efforts to live in a bubble and excessive use of hand sanitizer, I still got sick. Thankfully, times have changed and now I rarely get sick. I am sure my immune system is a lot healthier these days due to the diet changes we made several years back. I also learned how counterintuitive hand sanitizer can be. More on that in an upcoming post! In my quest to ensure that my family got and stayed healthy, I discovered a lot of natural alternatives.
I was first introduced to essential oils when my son was in preschool. Prior to that, I used lavender a bit and that was about it. The school used doTERRA On Guard in all of the classrooms and my son only got sick once in the two and a half years that he attended. I also noticed that the one time he got sick, he fought it off much quicker than the rest of us. As a result, I decided to give oils a try and it was a life changing experience. I do not sell nor am I an expert, but I do have quite the collection and I have learned a lot.
We have a diffuser that is on all the time and I rotate the oils that I use. If there is any sign of someone feeling under the weather or a kid is sick at school, the On Guard goes into the diffuser. If one of the kids are sick, I will dilute the On Guard in a carrier oil and rub on the bottoms of their feet. It really does the trick! I will also add a few drops to my all purpose cleaner to act as a disinfectant. You will not find a container of Lysol in my house!
**There are other good alternatives out there, but On Guard is the one that I settled on.**
If you have never heard of elderberry syrup before, you must go buy some stat. I first discovered this amazing supplement when I came down with mono several years back. Yes, I know I said that I never really get sick. However, what I failed to mention is that when I do get sick, I REALLY get sick. The doctor told me that I was probably going to be off work for a couple of weeks. He suggested that I give elderberry a try. I was skeptical and desperate all at the same time, so I picked some up on the way home. I ended up recovering in about a week, versus the three weeks to a month that the doctor originally projected. That is a miracle in my eyes!
Elderberry juice was actually used to treat a flu epidemic in Panama in 1995. Elderberry is a powerful antioxidant that has anti-viral properties. It has also been shown to help with allergy symptoms. The key, as with most more natural remedies, is to start treatment early. As soon as you get that feeling that you might be coming down with something, take a dose of this. If you are around sick people or the kids have classmates that are sick, you can also take once a day as a precautionary measure. It tastes good too, so that is always a plus for the kiddos. We actually call it “honey juice” at our house.
