Hi, friends! I have talked a bit about what we put into our bodies, but I have not talked a lot about what we put on our bodies. Do you know what is in the products that you put on your skin? It is pretty frightening! My daughter has been experiencing some endocrine issues and in my research to help heal her body, I discovering the alarming truth about the products that we are putting on our skin. Our skin is the largest organ and the chemicals that are absorbed make their way into the bloodstream. As a result, it is so important to be conscience of the ingredients that are in our products. Here are some things you can do today for cleaner beauty and healthier skin.
This may seem like a given, but there are so many products out there with harmful ingredients. It is easy to do your research by heading over to the Environmental Work Group’s site. My daughter was recently using what I thought was a relatively safe shampoo. When I looked it up on EWG, it was an 8! Unfortunately, one of the know issues of the chemical was causing endocrine disruption. Toxins such as lead, formaldehyde and parabens have been found in the products we put on our skin. Many of these toxins have harmful side effects, such as causing skin allergies, reproductive issues and even cancer!
Once I discovered that alarming news, I started doing my research and I discovered Beautycounter. I was so impressed with their mission to get safer skin care into the hands of everyone, that I knew I needed to try their products out. Before you buy your next beauty or skin care product, you need to watch this video.
I have tried other safer alternatives and they just did not perform and I ended up throwing them in the trash. I love the Beautycounter products even better than most of the department store brands I was using, so that is an added bonus! If you shoot me a message or comment below, I will be happy to share my favorites.
It is important to periodically detox your skin. At least once a week, I take an Epsom salt bath. The bath allows your pores to cleanse, but also allows your body to absorb the magnesium. Since so many of us are deficient in magnesium, this is one of those two for one activities. On top of that, who doesn’t enjoy a nice hot bath after the kids go to bed?
Once a week, I also like to use a charcoal mask. The charcoal mask pulls out all of the toxins and leaves you with extremely smooth skin. The charcoal mask is especially great for those suffering from acne and can even be used as a spot treatment. My tween daughter uses this product and I love that it does not have all of the chemicals that the traditional acne treatments have.
The foods you eat significantly impact your skin. If you are eating a lot of inflammatory foods such as wheat, red meat and dairy, your skin is going to be inflamed as well. If you are eating a diet rich in nutrients and high in healthy fats, your skin will flourish. It is also so very important to stay hydrated. You can seriously look five years younger just by drinking enough water in the day.
Recently, I have been very interested in the role that diet plays in skin cancer. Unfortunately, I have had skin cancer three times already and every time I go to the dermatologist I nearly have a panic attack. Several studies have shown that feeding your skin from the inside out is the best course of action for a healthy complexion. I have been following the recommendation in this article for a while now and have not had another reoccurrence of cancer since I started.
Yes, I know I said that diet can help prevent against skin cancer. However, I still think it is very important to wear sunscreen. Before you buy anything, please, please, please do your research. When I found out I had skin cancer for the first time, I was upset. However, when I found out about all of the chemicals that are in the majority of the sunscreens on the market, I was mortified. Many of the sunscreens out there contain a host of harmful chemicals that get into the bloodstream. Even worse, many of the sunscreens do not even protect against the sun’s harmful rays because the sunscreen is absorbed and the outer layers of the skin are left unprotected.
If you are going to use sunscreen, make sure it contains zinc oxide. This mineral protects the outer layers of the skin and does the job that sunscreen is supposed to do. It can be difficult to find a good mineral sunscreen. Many of the brands leave a nasty white residue that is far from attractive. I am already pale enough and I do not need any additional help in that department. There are a few brands that I like, but this one is my favorite.
I typically only wear sunscreen if I am going to be outside for an extended period of time in direct sun. Natural sunlight is actually good for you in moderation and is a wonderful source of Vitamin D.
There is nothing better than exercise to get the blood circulating, resulting in healthier skin. I can always tell when I have gone on a run in the morning because I still have a glow in the afternoon. The increase in blood flow carries oxygen and nutrients through the body and removes free radicals. These free radicals can cause skin damage and aging, more effectively. So, the next time your complexion is looking dull, lace up those running shoes!
